Hi

Welcome to this week’s newsletter and today’s topic speaks about motivation.

Every time you are in pursuit of something new, you are motivated. Each day starts with you being gung-ho about your goals. But slowly you lose your steam, and then the drive just vanishes. In most cases, this happens since you are not seeing results as early as you envisioned. But often there is more to it.

When you set a goal, it is important to establish whether you are intrinsically or extrinsically motivated.

Being motivated intrinsically or extrinsically each has it's own benefits.

Extrinsically Motivated

Everyone has this urge to belong and be loved. Extrinsic motivation is related to the rewards you receive from society around you. The rewards could be as simple as an acknowledgment of good work you did, a higher salary, bonuses, a promotion, etc.

Such motivations need not be in line with what you want but make you fit into the society around you. When with people you will find value in yourself, but when alone it may not give you satisfaction. Once the external pressure is gone, the motivation vanes too.

An example of this could be working hard at work, being good in a field in demand in society, or working in a high-paying job in a top company with the best house, car, and life society deems perfect.

Intrinsically Motivated

Being motivated intrinsically on the other hand is the complete opposite. You are aware of your needs and happiness. You do what is in line with what you want, not necessarily what the society expects.

Such motivations drive you to do things that help you satisfy your inner needs. You need not be in touch with what society demands of you since you are in touch with your internal needs. Such goals may make you feel like a pariah in society, but keep you happy when alone.

An example could be your creative pursuits, being good in areas that not many around you understand, but one that gives you happiness. Creating music, writing stories, and building a very niche business. A life you deem perfect.

Practical Approach

Research shows that intrinsic motivation is the key to staying on course to achieve your set goal. But society shows just intrinsic motivation, with no external acknowledgment can make you a recluse.

Not being in touch with the community around you can impact you socially. At the end of the day, man is a social animal, a solitary life may be satisfying for some, but may lead to a highly individualistic society that will avoid societal growth.

The solution is to find your tribe. We are a planet of 8 billion people, and everyone is quite different from one another. But even in these differences, there could be people who are your tribe. A musician can pursue the company of other musicians who acknowledge your talent. A baker can look online and network with people in the same field.

Doing so will provide a double benefit of being both externally as well as intrinsically motivated. Your tribe would also help you stay motivated by acting as a guide since they would understand your aspirations.

Below are quick steps to stay motivated.

  1. Find your intrinsic motivation, and set goals that satisfy you.
  2. Look for like-minded individuals who can form a community for external feedback and rewards.
  3. If interested build a system to monetize your goals so the earnings made so can fuel your pursuits both financially and emotionally.

How I Can Help?

My service can help in understanding what drives you internally. Once we have established your intrinsic motivation we can build a system for reaching out to the community around you. This community will be a network of peers or followers creating a metric to measure your success, and hence tweaking your approach to growth. You do not have to compromise your intrinsic goals for extrinsic motivation, we will work on making both the same.

I can hold you accountable, or tweak our approach to ensure you stay motivated.

Building a brand is built on intrinsic motivation merging with external rewards to keep you driven. So in case you don’t already have someone who can help you realize your dreams, reach out to me to discuss your aspirations.

Hope this newsletter brought you value. Stay tuned for future editions of my newsletter which speaks about personal growth and brand building.
