Hi

Welcome to the second newsletter in the ‘Insight To Impact‘ series.

Special thanks to Dinesh and Stephen Sovie for your kind words in your emails. Your words of encouragement are what keep this newsletter running.

Today is the second newsletter of my ‘Insight to Impact’ series. and this seems to be a good time to discuss ‘Procrastination’.

Think of that one task you want to get done as soon as ‘X’ happens.

It could be:

I will start working on my boutique business as soon as the kids start school.

I will start working on my fitness as soon as my daughter turns 2.

I will start working on my bakery business as soon as I am back from holidays.

We all have certain aspirations, and “when this, then that” plans.

In 95% of the cases it never materializes.

Have you wondered why?

I used to, and that is when I came across a behavioral psychology research that revealed a phenomenon called ‘Time Inconsistency’.

With time, our brain values immediate outcomes more than future preferred outcomes.

This preference pushes us to delay the actions required for the long-term goals.

We make excuses to keep our conscience clear, such as it is not our laziness causing delays, it’s the other event.

Losing weight, working on your passion project, and starting a business are all long-term goals.

We want them, but we know none will come to fruition immediately. This lack of immediate gratification puts those goals on the back burner.

So what is the best way to get our asses off the couch and do something about it?

Break It Down!!!!

Breaking down our long-term goals into smaller achievable goals is the best way to get things done.

As humans, we tend to gravitate towards immediate gratification.

The best way to achieve your dreams is to break down your long-term goals into small tasks with the least friction.

Want to eat healthy? Replace all sweets at home with fruits, and make them easily accessible.

Want to start working out? Get a membership to the closest gym, not the cheapest or fanciest, or buy some weights and start working out at home.

Want to start a business website? Start with a Facebook Page and promote it to your friends to gauge the response.

If you are not a morning person, do not plan your workout early in the day, sneak it into your lunch hours.

These small steps will help you get more immediate results, and the ease of getting it done will keep you motivated

We only have so much willpower for a day. Every time we force ourselves to do something we lose a bit of it. Be very stingy about where to use it.

Breaking down our goals into small achievable steps helps us to stay motivated, while still achieving our end goal.

You may think it is not possible to break down your goals into easy steps, but trust me it is.

Atomic Habit is the perfect book to learn more about it.
